Album Review: BLACKPINK's 'SQUARE UP'

BLACKPINK is back and presented fans with their first mini album after debuting in 2016. The album consists of four songs: 뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU), Forever Young, Really, and See U Later. With the album, a music video for their title track came out today as well.

Their song "뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU)" left me with no words, in a good way. Their vocals and raps are out-of-this-world amazing.

Pause.

To be frank, these songs are the type where you just jam out and bop your head to. And then, after you've cooled down enough, you would look at the songs' meaning and such. This first song off their album is unbelievable. It needs no words to showcase its awesome fiery package of bass and beats.

With "Forever Young," I had the expectation of it being meaningful. Was it met? In a way, yes. Silly me was expecting a calming and youth power song. BLACKPINK took the phrase "forever young" to the next level. The song started off soothing, but shoots up into an exhilarating enchantment of youth and living the "you only live once" motto. I don't hate this song, however I would not say it is my favorite. I love the chorus and raps a lot and all the phrases in the song such as "BLACKPINK is the revolution."

Right when I saw that one of their song will be "Really," I immediately thought of their Labelmates WINNER's song "REALLY REALLY." Anyways, in my opinion, this song give me a feelings of a combination of iKON's (another Labelmates) song "Love Scenario" and the background music of WINNER's "REALLY REALLY" with BLACKPINK's flare of course.

My favorite song is "See U Later." I love this song a lot. I love the lyrics of this song and the beat of it. Another reason why this song is my favorite is that this song puts their vocals, raps and voices in front of the beats, melody, and music itself. I also enjoy the instrumental beginning and powerful ending. I love this song so much, here are some of the lyrics:

See u later boy see u later
See u later boy see u later later
See u later boy see u later
Would have could have should have
Didn’t

See u later boy see u later
See u later boy see u later later
See u later boy see u later
See u later maybe never

I realize that the lyrics above are just the song's
name, so here is more of lyrics to the song.

Other/more comments:
  • Their first song and sound in general is like the psychedelic drug I never knew existed.
  • Their voices, especially Jisoo (my bias, is chilling and satisfying to the hairs of my ears, and it is really "in your face" badass.
  • The lyrics of all their songs are unlike any girl group I've seen. It's because they're the only "hardcore" (<--- not sure if that's the best term) girl group I listen to.
  • These songs are so catchy that it will never be annoying, if that's makes sense.
  • Everything vibrates when I play their album. It's feels as though their music is flowing through me. The background music, beats, bass, and whatnot are all pushing pass my eardrums.
  • I really love "See U Later."

I still can't comprehend how ground-breaking this new song is. Maybe because they come from YG Entertainment, and any song that comes from there is off-the-charts mesmerizing and beautifully hyped. Maybe because they are all unstoppable when they are together. Maybe because I am in shock and love them so much. Maybe it's Teddy, their writer, composer, and arranger of their songs. Maybe because it's their time and BLACKPINK is coming at every one who was waiting almost a year for them. Maybe because it's BLACKPINK, the greatest girl-crush girl group of this generation of K-pop.

Now every time that they make a comeback, they will be hitting everyone with "that ddu-du ddu-du du." This is honestly that only way to describe their album, their comeback is so ddu-du ddu-du du. Their songs are ddu-du ddu-du du. This first mini album of theirs is incredibly ddu-du ddu-du du.

BLACKPINK 화이팅!

Below are their songs (with English translations and music video; this is all found on YouTube:

For fun, I translated what  뚜두뚜두 (DDU-DU DDU-DU) is in English. Yes, it is just a sound. But when translated it means "thoracic toad," which means an attack of chest pains. Translating this was just for fun.
