Music Video Review: SHINee's 'Good Evening'

With little to no knowledge of the SM Entertainment's group SHINee, this newest comeback of theirs is best described as a blue-green dream.

Before checking out this music video, I have heard of their song "Lucifer" and enjoyed the entirety of the bass-filled song. Coming into listening to this song, I had no expectations whatsoever. I don't follow SHINee and I barely know the members' names. I have read headlines of their comeback being "sophisticated," "fierce," and "colorful."

Though I cannot distinguish any of the four members in the music video or by voice, I felt really at peace after watching the music video. The camera angles are just a mere observation to the naked eye at first. Next thing I'd notice it the mysterious fox in more than one scene. The aesthetic is unbelievable and the song itself is something worth talking about. The variety of image projection in this music video is unlike any other I've seen. I really love each members' outfits.

Some of my own personal favorite parts of the music video are when Taemin hits the high note and feels it so much that the viewer feels it as well; the scene where all four members were dancing under plastic wrap and the paint starts covering it; the transitions from one location to the next; and the fifth chair near the beginning of the music video.

Thinking back to "Lucifer," I remember hearing the late Kim Jonghyun's incredible high note. And then seeing the fifth chair laid out their with the four members in a chair as well is one of the most cathartic director move. Right after the buildup to Taemin's high note, I started to get goosebumps from that part and on.

Knowing that most K-pop music videos are very unpredictable and not to be explained, the song itself makes up for the meaning of every frame of the music video.

After enjoying their music video, I began watching their Music Bank comeback stage. I really notice their healing hair colors this time. The simple usage of the chairs and effortless flow of the connection within the choreography and their facial expressions holds this song together.

Following the amazement I came to become of, I checked out the lyrics in translation. Though I didn't think it was about the emotions of going to someone, I did greatly admire the song's meaning.

To sum it up, "Good Evening" is to be enveloped as a song to heal with and just let consume your still body to have it move you through the day.

Though I will not be following them, I look forward to more of their music since they have renewed their contract.

샤이니...화이팅!
